An antique enamel and gold miniature propelling pencil pendant

An antique enamel and gold miniature propelling pencil pendant with vivid turquoise blue and white polka dot guilloche enamel in excellent condition, originally designed as a portable pencil.

Around the turn of the century quirky miniature jewels were very popular often as fobs for pocket watches, particularly for gentlemen who were somewhat restricted by the dictates of socially acceptable fashion as to what jewellery a gentleman could wear. Many such as small pocket knives, compasses etc were nominally useful. Samuel Mordan who co-invented the first mechanical propelling pencil monopolised the market in this area in Great Britain. This piece has a maker’s mark on the bail but unfortunately is illegible. This small colourful pendant is in this tradition of humorous nominally useful jewels.
