Rare historic signet ring by Donovan and Overland, Perth, Western Australia
– July 2011 –
This rare historic signet ring by Donovan and Overland of Perth, Western Australia which is available at James Alfredson, Melbourne, Australia, features a design of sophisticated restraint and pleasing weightiness. Fluted shoulders and mount terminate in elegantly formed concave claws holding a large modified rectangular amethyst with gently curved ends and scissor cut sides. The mount is polished 18 carat yellow gold, stamped also to the inside of the shank with the “Key” mark of Donovan and Overland’s jewellery.
Donovan and Overland opened as manufacturing and wholesale jewellers in Perth in 1897. They traded as manufacturing and wholesale jewellers supplying many of the retail jewellers on the goldfields and in Perth. They occupied a number of locations in Perth, but closed in 1921. Their jewellery is much sought after for its elegant simplicity and surprisingly crisp modern feel, but pieces such as this ring only occasionally come on the market.
